Program
African Dance and Drum ensemble from Montclair State University began the program, which was hosted by Rev. Jessie Branson of Union Baptist Church in Montclair. The program included singing, dancing and poetry with audience participation.
The highlight of the afternoon was a performance by recorder soloist Emily O’Brien, a professional from Boston who will perform “Oracle," a composition by award-winning contemporary African–American composer Melika Fitzhugh. Emily will be accompanied by a string quartet from APEX ensemble.
Metropolitan Opera singer Roosevelt Credit & singers offered up early hymns and spirituals.
Montclair Early Music’s ensemble with contralto Elsa Larsson performed rarely performed music by African–American composers, including William Grant Still, Julia Niebergall, and Nathaniel Dett.
JazzHouse Kids delighted the audience with Jazz standards, accompanied by Lindy Hop dancers Nisreen Almazouni and Jim Geyer.
Performers from Montclair Early Music's children's program led off the finale: L'il Liza Jane, which included verses customized to Montclair written by MEM member Nathaniel Cheney.
During intermission the audience had a chance to view an art exhibit reflecting the Black experience curated by Heather Carter Fine Arts. A portion of sale proceeds will benefit Montclair Early Music’s children’s program.
