Are you looking for an accessible, engaging music class that will develop your child's musical ear?
If your child has aged out of the singing and movement-based toddler music classes but has some years ahead before choosing an instrument in school, or is not yet ready or discouraged by the technical demands of taking private lessons to learn piano or violin, we have the perfect class for you: a recorder class that uses gamification to develop the musical ear in an engaging, social way without the technical barriers to entry of violin and piano.
Students learn the language of music just the way they learned to speak, playing by ear using the Suzuki method. Each week the child embarks on an adventure to vanquish a dragon through music. Each song has unique musical characteristics: some songs will put the dragon to sleep; others will scare the dragon away. Small group classes facilitate teamwork as the children strategize on the best way to handle the week's challenge.
At the conclusion of the session, the children perform with the adults in concert, building confidence that transcends music-making. Our classes emphasize learning to be a team player while having fun and developing the musical ear.
Music literacy is important— but we should not allow rigid learning to get in the way of cultivating a "feelingful" connection to music. Too frequently, young music students struggle to engage music emotionally, at least within formalized instruction programs. Their relationship with music is channeled through their fingers and through the notes on the page, instead of through the ear and the heart. At MEM we strongly believe that young children should be learn via a balance of academic study and music appreciation. Our program's goal is to develop truly musical, creative, and emotionally engaged young people. Let us bring a little bit a music and adventure into your child's life!
